The spotlight and the hype that came with the night of the Oscars meant that the online bookmakers had a good night in overall. This especially occurred when the Best Picture Oscar-Winner was taken by Spotlight, directed by Mark Ruffalo on Sunday evening. Spotlight shrugged off stiff competition from the likes of The Revenant which was the odds-on favourite, even after scooping a host of awards on the evening.

The Revenant, which had racked in more awards earlier at the Golden Globes awards, was expected to repeat the clean sweep at the Oscars. This time around the real-life story, Spotlight, that centres on a team of journalists from Boston Globe in the US, proved to have done a good investigation and claimed the coveted prize.

Only experienced gamblers were able to put their trust Spotlight to triumph

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure that had The Revenant not been released in time for the Golden Globe awards, Spotlight would have got the Best Drama award. The Spotlight producer, Michel Sugar also said: “This film gave a voice to survivors and this Oscar amplifies that voice. We hope we will become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican. Pope Francis, it’s time to protect the children and restore the faith.”

The Best Picture was somehow the trickiest accolade for the players to bet on. This is not denying the fact that for Spotlight to win the accolade, it was picked by the Critics Choice and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) of the US. This is despite the fact that The Revenant had already pipped it to the Golden Globes. As it turned out, the experienced betters did not have it their way this time around.

Leo DiCaprio finally lands the big fish

After several years of trying with no success and at times coming very close, Leonardo DiCaprio has finally managed to get the Best Actor award at the Oscars. This was for his outstanding performance in The Revenant. This was an easy guess for any bookmaker and they walked away with a fortune.

Australia’s own Cate Blanchett however did not get the Best Actress accolade in Hollywood despite getting the gongs back home for her role in Carol. Much to the dismay of many bookers in the role. On the other hand, Brie Larson did not disappoint as she walked away with the top acting award for the role of a kidnapped mother in Room.
