Australian Government’s Safety Guidelines Regarding Loot boxes

Many governments around the world are now considering loot boxes as a form of gambling and feel that they could encourage children to gamble. It is for that reason that the Australian government has decided to do something about it.

From the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, there are guidelines that educate Aussies about loot boxes and why they are considered to be gambling. According to the website, the guidelines will help Australians have a safe, positive gaming experience online.

The guidelines mention that gambling requires the risk of losing something valuable for a prize, which in most cases is money. It also wants Australians to be able to differentiate between gambling and online gaming.  Hence there might be confusion around them and whether they are gambling or not.

What are Loot Boxes?

Loot boxes are the virtual in-game items that players can purchase or earn. The box will contain things to customise characters or even armour and weapons to use in the video game. Players have the option to use real money to buy the loot boxes or earn points while playing the game and use them to purchase the boxes.

They first made an appearance in the video games back in 2007 and became more popular in 2016 when the Overwatch game was launched. What gave rise to the controversy is the loot boxes that were in the Star Wars Battlefront II video game pre-launch in 2017.

According to the gaming community, EA Games had made the time frame of earning enough points to purchase loot boxes unreasonable. So, it gave players who could purchase them with real money an unfair advantage. EA Games eventually decided to remove them from the video game.


More and more people are having the loot boxes debate and are moving towards regarding them as a form of gambling. The people who will be most affected are the children who play the video games and risk leading them towards gambling activities. It is also feared that they will normalise gambling.
