Sydney’s Star Casino has been involved in a controversial $1.5 million donation to a children’s charity, Barnardos Australia. The charity received a generous donation that would help over 40 000 children, but the Community Council of Australia see no reason why the charity should be funded by the “immoral industry”.

According to the council, the charity should not accept the donation as this directly promotes the gambling industry. This is despite the Barnardos Charity explaining that they have made “careful consideration” before accepting the cash injection.

The cash donation by the Star Casino will be used to set up programmes aimed at helping vulnerable youths and assisting those who are trying to get into the working world.

The spokesperson for the Barnardos Charity also said that the donation will help youngsters to be aware of gambling risks and actually help them stay away from the streets. Deirdre Cheers, CEO of Barnardos Australia said the numbers grow annually and there is an urgent need of financial assistance.

“This donation means we will be able to directly help many, many more children.”

After the Donation, Barnardos Australia said it will work with the Star Casino and the parents of the kids so that they actually curb Australia’s big problem with gambling. The charity also admitted that they are aware of the possible outcomes of the deal, but insist that they will not let the youth be sucked into the negatives of gambling.

“Barnardos is of course acutely aware of the damage gambling can inflict on families,” Cheers added, “and the child protection-related concerns that can result from that, so we really are very confident that this particular funding relationship allows us to enter actively into a conversation and a dialogue about mitigating the risks posed to children, and we’re quite confident that we can have those conversations with The Star and with the people who manage The Star and indeed with the customers.”

It is believed that through this donation, Barnardos will use the funds to secure the future of the children so that they do not end up on the gambling tables.
