Wsop 2020 Lineup Takes Shape With Poker Variety

It may seem like May of 2020 is too far off to make plans. For poker players looking forward to the World Series of Poker, though, it is never too soon.

The WSOP team has been releasing information earlier every year about the May-July series in Las Vegas. This time, they released the core dates and information about some of the most anticipated and high-profile tournaments before Christmas. And as the month of January flies by, they want to put more information out into the world.

With so many thousands of players traveling to Las Vegas each summer, it makes sense to give them enough notice so they can garner money-saving deals on hotel rooms. Of course, they also need to sort their poker bankrolls to figure out what events they can play.

Review of December Revelations

The first two announcements about the 51st World Series of Poker that were in December covered some important ground.

The 2020 WSOP will be at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas yet again. Cash games will begin on May 26, 2020, with the first gold bracelet events starting the next day. Action will run through mid-July.

The Main Event, also known as the $10K buy-in No Limit Hold’em World Championship, will offer three starting days July 1-3 and play through to July 14, at which point there will be a winner. The WSOP also revealed tournaments reserved for seniors, women, and casino employees, as well as popular events like the Millionaire Maker, Monster Stack, Colossus, and Little One for One Drop.

Championship Additions

The championship tournaments are a hit every year with high-stakes players, as the events typically come with buy-ins of $10,000. But they also attract players who specialize in a particular poker variation, as they span 24 poker variations in total.

On January 9, the WSOP released the dates and details for 15 championship tournaments new to the growing lineup of events. There are now 17 tournaments on the championship list, including the Main Event, all requiring a $10K buy-in.

The exception is the Poker Players Championship, which is a $50K buy-in and is a mix of games. Previous PPC events offered an 8-game mix, but this year, No Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw is added for a 9-game mix.

Value Additions

Less than one week later, the WSOP added tournaments on the opposite end of the bankroll spectrum. They called the list of 25 events the “Value Menu” for players, all tournaments with buy-ins of $1K or less.

There were 15 events that had not yet been announced for the 2020 games, including two brand new events to the WSOP: Forty Stack and Freezeout No Limit Hold’em. One of those freezeout events, with no reentries allowed, will actually kick off the series this year, taking over that spot from the Casino Employees event.
