Sportsbet ad has caused one of the greatest stirs in Australia with their new Android app advert. They have used one of the most known players, Ben Johnson, that has been disgraced by Aussies for using anabolic steroids to win his match in 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Federal government prepares to act on gambling advertising, and they have to come to see disappointing news from Sportsbet. With this said, it is a disappointment to the Australian government.
Sportsbet and its owners are renowned for pushing the limits with their advertising campaigns. However, their new advert has caused a great disturbance amongst AU citizens.
Television networks have reported a flood of complaints about the advertisement. Furthermore, the Federal Sports Minister Greg Hunt has uttered his feelings about the ad calling Sportsbet to pull down the ad. Hunt expressed his feelings saying that using a drug cheat to advertise their product is inappropriate. Anti-gambling MP Senator Nick Xenophon also threatens to go to the ACMA to complain about the ad.
The use of a drug cheat is seen as an insult and wrong as it glorifies the use of drugs. Even more, it is heard that the ex-sprinter has been paid up to six figures to do the ad. Sportsbet spokesperson said that Sportsbet doesn’t condone the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The federal communications minister Mitch Fifield is set to confirm that the betting ad is to be banned during live sporting events before 8:30 pm.
It looks unprofessional for Sportsbet to do such an ad and include someone who is not fit to be on it. Sportsbet might have had their reasons for why they chose to use Ben Johnson, but at the end, they should have looked out for what is in the best interest of the citizen of Australia.
