There are laws that do not allow sports betting in the US. However, with the recent push for legalization of sports betting, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the appeal from New Jersey. Following the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992, the state is not allowed to participate in sports betting.
The 2011 referendum approved changes in the laws in which New Jersey has passed legislation twice to allow sports betting. Furthermore, they couldn’t go on with the sports betting because of the law (PAPSA) had passed, forbidding sports betting in New Jersey. Hope was finally given back to New Jersey after a five-year battle. Solicitor General Jeffrey Wall advised in contradiction of the Supreme Court considering its case in May.
The Supreme Court
The courts have agreed to take a look at the PAPSA law and come back with a decision within the next twelve months. Sports betting is seen to have a future in New Jersey hence they are fighting for it to be legalized. Even though the battle is not over yet, New Jersey gamers are excited and hope for the best.
Some of the sports such as the NBA, NCAA, NHL, NFL, and MLB have objected to suggested changes to the PASPA legislation. However, with time their decisions seem to be somewhat swayed. The NBA and MLB support the legalization of sports betting. Furthermore, some of the members are still not sure where they stand at the moment. Players can choose to play sports betting such as football, golf, and horse racing. Lawmakers are keeping a close eye on the case in Washington and the repeal of the PASPA that is currently being drafted by the congressional committee.
New Jersey Citizens
The citizens of New Jersey are very excited about the legalization of sports betting, showing consistent support. The congress and supreme courts will have their own views about this whole appeal and share their views. Tough decision are to be made.
