The US men’s soccer team has not qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1986. In what has been described as an embarrassing defeat, the team lost against Trinidad and Tobago. This was after defeating Panama a week earlier. The odds were in the US soccer team’s favour for Nevada’s sportsbooks, until they lost 2-1.
This year’s qualifiers have seen a number of smaller nations qualify, while teams like the United States have fallen flat. Trinidad and Tobago were a long shot for Nevada bookmakers, facing money lines of +1000. However, the elimination of the US has opened a new chapter for other countries hoping to win big in Russia.
US Soccer Team – Poor Play
It would seem that the men’s team were sluggish and demotivated despite beating Panama by 4-0. Lady luck was not on their side when Honduras beat Mexico by one goal (3-2). A win by Panama against Costa Rica sealed the fate of the US team, who have since been eliminated from the qualifiers. This is the first time Panama has qualified to play in the FIFA World Cup.
In the now-historic game against Trinidad and Tobago, one US player scored an own goal. If it weren’t for this, experts speculated that they might have qualified with a tie. This was not to be for the US Soccer Team in the men’s qualifiers. On the other hand, the women’s team had no such problems, and went through. The women’s team are Olympic finalists, and miles ahead of the men’s team in football.
FIFA World Cup
The qualifying channel of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) is considered one of the easiest in the world. However, it seems that five of the six teams were out for blood, and the US was knocked out. Three teams have already qualified for the World Cup and they are Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico. Honduras will have to play in the inter-confederation playoffs to have a chance at the World Cup title against the Socceroos.
ESPN Soccer writer, Jeff Carlisle, was one of many Americans upset by the defeat. He said: ‘It’s the most embarrassing defeat in US soccer history.’ We can’t help but agree with him. So, for more results and sports betting news, watch this space.
